Muhammad Sajid Hussain is a molecular geneticist at the Cologne Center for Genomics (CCG), University of Cologne. He earned his PhD in Genetics in 2011, with a dissertation focused on the molecular genetic analysis of autosomal recessive primary microcephaly in Pakistani families. His research is centered on uncovering the genetic and molecular basis of neurodevelopmental and musculoskeletal disorders. Muhammad Sajid Hussain has contributed to the discovery of numerous disease-associated genes—including CEP135, CDK6, NUP37, SASS6, KIF14, CKAP2L, CSNK2B, RRP7A, PCDHGC4, LEF1, and ZFTRAF1—many of which had not previously been linked to human diseases.

Currently, Muhammad Sajid Hussain is part of the NGS platform at the CCG, particularly within the framework of the West German Genome Center (WGGC), where he plays key roles as a project manager. Furthermore, he leads projects investigating novel candidate genes, such as C1orf131, a recently identified nucleolar protein essential for brain development. His work integrates cutting-edge approaches like long-read genome sequencing and zebrafish modeling to uncover pathogenic mechanisms in individuals with unresolved genetic diagnoses.

Muhammad Sajid Hussain´s research of advances the understanding of rare genetic disorders, particularly in underrepresented populations and bridges clinical genomics and functional biology to support diagnostics and therapeutic development. See here for more information.
